Customer Review: There are some excellent selections from the poetry, short fiction, and drama genres in here. Oedipus Rex, Hamlet, Battle Royal, etc. You also have some dogs. Proof, the Red Wheelbarow (and other William Carlos Williams poems). Bottom line, whoever edited this anthology had no idea the amount of books a college student carries around and this one is very large. There's a lot of filler here, so suggestion to Bedford: take out some of the non-essentials to slim down this book. One semester doesn't cover 1,200 pages.

Customer Review: Since ordering this book on May 21, 2008, I have neither received the book nor any communication from the server (as of June 20, 2008). I have contacted Amazon twice by phone and they've told me to wait "3 more days" each time I've called. Then they told me to contact the 3rd party supplier (Yoshi6363). I've done that also to NO AVAIL!!!!!! My class starts in 2 weeks and I still have no book!!!! Now I need to cancel that order, try to get my money BACK and reorder the book I NEED!!!! My students are practicing teachers who have seen dozens of lesson planning approaches and don't need some new theory just for the fun of it. But Wiggins and McTighe present a fresh perspective that doesn't so much replace as reposition traditional approaches. It boils down to what they call backward design--or identifying learning outcomes and assessments before addressing fun activities or how to meet state standards. This means the fun activities, state standards, and building or district level lesson plan formats all work with their system--they just remind us all to figure out the purpose of a lesson before committing the "twin sins" of merely entertaining the students or covering the material.

Customer Review: This book provides detailed descriptions of management consulanting firms. Companies covered: McKinsey, Booz Allen Hamilton, Cresap, Robert Heller, Arthur D. Little, Boston Consulting Group, Bain and Company, and many others. McKinsey started in 1930s, hired the best MBAs from Harvard, MIT, other Ivy League schools, moved them up the corporate ladder. They either became partners at McKinsey or they were out. Other firms followed suit. Many of them landed as CEOs later in their careers. Lou Gerstner is a good example, turned around IBM in the 90s.
Jeff Skilling was the other extreme. Armed with the Harvard MBA, 10 year McKinsey experience, drove Enron to the ground. Sarbanes-Oxley Act soon followed. Even the best can fall.
I recommend this book. This book will be better, if it placed less emphasis on the historical timelines of each firm, and more on the success/failure of the profession.

Customer Review: Upon delivery of this book, you will immediately notice two things:
1)It's very thin
and
2)It is published by an evangelical Christian publisher. Why a Christian organization would be interested in publishing a defense of the Electoral College should go without saying.
In an endnote to the 1989 second edition of "The Selfish Gene,"
Richard Dawkins(who I'm no fan of) commented on Fred Hoyle's
characterization of Darwinism in his publications
arguing for an extraterrestrial origin of terrestrial life:
"Publishers should correct the misapprehension that a scholar's
distinction in one field implies authority in another. And as long as
that misapprehension exists, distinguished scholars should resist the
temptation to abuse it."
The publisher of this book ought to have heeded this advice, because the author's scholarship of theology has only resulted in one atrocious book. Any pretense of objectivity is foregone, as the back cover blatantly condemns "Democrats and liberals" for advocating the abolishment of the Electoral College. A large portion of this brisk read does not even explore why the Electoral College is "important", but instead dryly transcribes its history. While this is certainly interesting, the strict facts behind the creation of the Electoral College undercut the 21st century version more than anything, because the circumstances behind its creation were not based on any universal enduring political principles but merely that it protected much of the Constitutional Convention delegation's interests. I'm in the process of extensively researching the Electoral College for a term paper, and this book offered not even in one fact worth citing. The best defense of the Electoral College I've read thus far is Tara Ross' "Enlightened Democracy", and the best critique I've read is Neil Peirce and Lawrence Longley's "The Electoral College Primer 2000". If you're interested in quality arguments on both sides of the debate, check those books out, and don't even consider this one.

Customer Review: This book has fabulous consulting cases and is written well. The longer cases are broken into parts so you have time to stop and think about what you would do and then read on to see what the consultants did in the next part and what the outcome was.
This is one of the best consulting case books ever written.
